EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY CODEVELOPED NEW STUDENT HOUSING COMMUNITY AT TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
Apartments Scheduled to Open Fall 2001
Houston, TX - A new 308-bed, student housing community will soon open its doors for those students attending Houston's own - Texas Southern University ("TSU"). Located off Boldgett Avenue and Canfield Street, University Courtyard Apartments will feature fully furnished 4 bedroom / 2 bath apartments that offer a variety of amenities, including a microwave oven, frost-free refrigerator, swimming pool, computer lab, fitness center and numerous of other services geared specifically for college students.
University Courtyard was financed using tax-exempt bonds issued through the City of Houston Higher Education Finance Corporation. The International law firm, Vinson & Elkins, L.L.P. played an instrumental role in the successful sale of the bonds, valued in excess of $11 million.
According to Vinson & Elkins partner John Kyles, "My colleagues and I were both excited and challenged by this project. We were excited because of Vinson & Elkin's longstanding commitment to helping TSU. We were challenged by TSU's clear need to have this project completed as soon as possible. That, coupled with the particular demands of building in the inner-city, put pressure on everybody. It was pressure that was well worth it. I'm proud of our accomplishment!"
"This is an important project for Texas Southern University. The students at TSU are our priority and this administration is committed to seeing that they have all of the necessary resources to ensure a successful college experience," said Dr. Willie Marshall, Associate Provost for Student Affairs at Texas Southern University. "Additionally, having on-campus housing is another vehicle the university can use to attract and retain students."
"The construction of new housing for our students mirrors our vision of providing a hospitable living and learning environment - which is one of this administration's major visionary points for Texas Southern University," continued Dr. Marshall. "This state-of-the-art housing project will provide our students with spacious living quarters, the latest technology and other amenities that will aid the university in providing the type of nurturing environment, including social and academic interaction, that is necessary for a true college experience."
University Courtyard Apartments in Houston, Texas will be ready for occupancy this fall. Also, Educational Development Company recently co-developed a University Courtyard community in Tallahassee, FL that opened last August to serve the Florida A&M University student market.
